Triangle, aka Utthita Trikonasana, is one of the best known and most commonly practiced yoga poses. A major stretch for the hamstrings and hips, as well as a chest opener, this pose can also be a serious strengthener of the core and legs. It’s important to stay engaged and actively lengthen in the pose, not just tip over and hang, so as to get all the benefits. The recent full moon and never ending heatwave have me feeling a crazed and therefore grateful for my daily yoga practice to ground me. Moving, letting go of obsessive thought patterns, letting go of stored stress and sadness in my body, allows me to move more freely throughout the rest of my day. Supta Virasana, or Supine Hero Pose is a deep stretch opening the entire front of the body. This pose targets the quads and hip flexors, as well as the shins, and also elongates the abs and opens the chest. It feels fabulous after a long day (or even better after a long week). Vinyasas can vary depending on how you feel. Sometimes they can be strong, fast movements, and other times you may linger in your Updog, adding some wiggles or breathes to open your chest and elongate your spine. That is one of the many beauties of yoga, each pose is yours to adjust to you and your practice that day. Revolved Triangle, aka Parivrtta Trikonasana, is an intense stretch of the hamstrings and lower back. This pose also helps detox the body by stimulating the digestive organs in the twist, as well as opens the chest and shoulders. Three Limbed Forward Bend, aka Triang Mukha Eka Pada Paschimottanasana, is a challenging but rewarding pose rarely practiced outside of Ashtanga. One leg is extended forward getting into the hamstrings while the other leg is bent, shin facing down similar to Hero Pose stretching the entire from of the leg from toes to quad. Adding the forward fold lengthens the spine as well. Expect to come into this pose (and many others too) in my 4:30pm Saturday class @lucentyoga.
